Description

A tool designed for those interested in joining collective building (CPO) to find like-minded participants before the first formal group meeting. Through play, they have a deeper understanding of each other's visions.

Project Introduction

This design project is part of a larger project of Smart Technologies Empowered Citizens (STEC), and focuses on creating hybrid tools for collective housing development. We created a tool to let people define and safeguard their shared ideas, values and visions.

We focused on the starting phase of a building project and on aiding in the formation of a well-functioning group with a grasp on a realistic shared vision. By conducting desk research, interviews, expert consultant, user tests and discussions, we finally came down to the design of Simul.

Simul is a digital tool with which people who want to join a collective building project, can find projects and fellow people, as well as exploring group dynamics of a potential building group and form and express one's own vision on neighborhood building. It is done by playing and working together, shaping a digital playground, visualizing and discussing vision related aspects. The in-game discussions will establish ground ideas, and let users explore and discuss to create a well functioning building group that is knowledgeable about their shared vision.

Product.

Simul is not intended to solve all problems within the time frame of the building process, instead, it opens up the conversation and brings out possibilities. The tool serves as a starting point to channel people towards forming a group and developing vision.

Our expert, Bart Aptroot from One Architecture, noted that one of Simul's main strengths is its versatility, Simul has the potential to translate many types of projects and is not limited to CPO building. Urban organization projects could also be supported in Simul. By visualizing more data sets, we could see more in-depth understanding of citizens' vision and future envision.

Investigating context

This project took the iterative design thinking approach. We have prototype and validation after each brainstorm session and gathered enough feedback to analysis before confirming a design decision.

LEARNINGS.

Understanding the context of this project and finding one design focus is really important for this project.
